An Evening with Director/Producer Karen Mintz
October 10, 2011
Program Chair – Kate Breuning
When not filming in remote places like the Himalayan country of Bhutan, or completing work on a documentary film about forensic sculptor Frank Bender, Karen likes to take life easy at home in Lambertville. You didn’t know we have an Emmy award-winning filmmaker living here in town? Join us for a rare look behind the scenes as Karen discusses her current project, The Recomposer of the Decomposed, a feature-length movie about a real life murder mystery. Perhaps we can even help solve what People Magazine has called a “cold case.”
Cheryl Leibold, Retired Archivist at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art
November 14, 2011
Program Chair – Jean Mihich
Violet Oakley — illustrator, muralist, writer, and pacifist — played a prominent role in the artistic life of Philadelphia for almost half a century. Best known as an illustrator, she was also a mural painter, and stained glass artist. Her greatest achievement was the extensive mural series for the Pennsylvania Capitol. Oakley was a co-founder of several Philadelphia cultural organizations, and in addition was internationally known as a pacifist, and supporter of the League of Nations. Remaining active until her death, she started the “Great Women of the Bible” murals for the First Presbyterian Church of Germantown when she was over seventy years old. This lecture will discuss Oakley’s work as an illustrator in the larger context of her entire career, as well as her association with several other famous illustrators known as the “Red Rose Girls.”

Please note: this meeting is held at the Coryell Gallery.
The Coryell Gallery Show is one of the most popular of the year and we are happy to invite Club members to a private Art Preview of the prestigious Annual Juried Show. Owner and curator (and Kalmia member) Janet Hunt will discuss the current show. This is always a fun event, with all the glitter (and wine) of a private gallery in Soho. So feel free to bring your significant other for a winter evening. You just might find something for that blank wall in your house.

Peter Meissner, recognized as the leading authority on the early artware and currently one of the co-presidents of the Stangl Collector’s Club, will speak about the history of the pottery, its art ware and dinnerware designs, the designers, and will include numerous examples of the pottery produced by the company. He has collected Stangl for over 20 years and in 2009-2010 exhibited part of his collection at the Trenton City Museum.
